A chapel was established in the name of St. Peter at Meenangadi, Wayanad, in AD 1948. Rabban Kadavil Paulose (Later Kadavil Paulose Mor Athanasius) celebrated the first Holy Qurbono in the same year. In AD 1950, the then metropolitan of Kochi - Malabar Diocese, His Grace Mulayirikkal Paulose Mor Severios visited the chapel. A church was built in AD 1951. Poomattathil Paulose Kassisso was appointed as the vicar of the church in AD 1952. Peace occurred in Malankara church in AD 1958 and both the factions of the church united. Late Mookkancherril Pathrose Mar Osthatheos was appointed as the metropolitan of Malabar Diocese.
But due to the split occurred in 1970's, the church was closed down and become under the custody of Receiver in AD 1974. Majority stood under the true faith, ie under the Apostolic See of Antioch & all the East. They bought a land beside the NH and built a church in the names of St. Peter & St. Paul in the same year. About 375 member families were there at that time. His Grace Dr. Mor Dionasius Thomas (Catholicose Dr. Aboon Mor Baselios Thomas Ist) took the charge of the diocese and appointed Pulliyattel Michael Kassisso as the vicar of the church. Foundation stone for a new church was laid down by Late Lamented Catholicose Aboon Mor Baselios Paulose IInd on AD 1975 December 1st, in the presence of hundreds of faithful and metropolitans Their Grace Dr. Mor Dionasius Thomas and Dr. Mor Gregorios Geevarghese ('Perumpally Thirumeni'). Late Lamented metropolitan Dr. Mor Gregorios Geevarghese DD was the metropolitan of Malabar from 1975 January to December.
Very Rev. Samuel Rabban MA was consecrated as the Metropolitan for Malabar by the name Samuel Mor Philaxinos at Thuruthusserry Morth Mariyam Simhasana Church in December 26 by Catholicose Mor Baselios Paulose IInd. 'Sunthroniso' was held at this church on AD 1976 January 6. Samuel thirumeni stayed at this church for a long period. Catholicose HB Mor Baselios Paulose IInd declared this church as the CATHEDRAL of Malabar Diocese on AD 1976 December 2. In the year AD 1982, Patriarch Moran Mor Ignatius Zakka Iwas Ist visited the church and honoured the vicar of this church, Kassisso P. C. Michael Pulliyattel by elevating him as a 'Cor-Episcopa'.
Due to the sad demise of Samuel Thirumeni in the year AD 1985, Rev. Dr. John Jacob DD, ThD was elected as the metropolitan designate for Malabar. Vicar and member of this church Cor Episcopus was the administrator of the diocese till the consecration of Rev. Dr. John Jacob. Catholicose HB Mor Baselios Paulose IInd consecrated him as the metropolitan of Malabar on 12th September 1985 at this church and given him the name Mor Philaxinos. Sunthroniso of new metropolitan was held at this church a day after the ordination. Due to the effort of Dr. Mor Philaxinos Yuhanon DD, ThD the case of the old church was settled down in a peaceful manner.
The renovation of the church was finished in the year AD 1993 and the consecration of the church was done in the same year Dec 3rd, by Dr. Mor Gregorios Geevarghese DD of Kottayam, Dr. Mor Philaxinos Yuhanon DD, ThD of Malabar, Mor Osthatheos Benyamin Joseph of Simhasana Churches, Dr. Mor Militheos Yuhanon ThD of Trichur, Dr. Mor Themotheos Thomas ThD of Outer Kerala Diocese. Golden Jubilee of the establishment of the church and Silver Jubilee of Cathedral Declaration was celebrated in AD 1999. There are 746 member families in the church at present. This church is the mother church of St. Thomas JSO Church Thrikkaipetta (Estd: AD 1952), St. George JSO Cathedral Pulpally (Estd: AD 1954), St. Mary's JSO EAE Church Meenangadi (Estd: AD 1957), St. Mary's JSO Church Cheengeri (Estd: AD 1958), St. Mary's Church, Kariambadi (Estd: AD 1958), St. Thomas JSO Church Kolagappara (Estd: AD 1958) & St. Mary's JSO Church Poothadi (Estd: 1958)
